The Kansas City Section hosted its Annual Winter Gala Event at the Hereford House in Leawood, Kansas.  Despite the cold, the turnout was good and a stellar evening of food and friendship was punctuated by several presentations:  The new officers and board presented to the membership.  Past presidents Mark Moody, John Ryan, Bob DelPopolo, and Ian Harns were honored and presented with the MBCA Past President’s lapel pin.  John Ryan was awarded the Member of the Year plaque and lapel pin.  Rich Carlson received the Section’s gavel as passed to each president since 1986.   Alice Lewinsohn was awarded with a certificate and 20-year membership pin.  Eight winners of the door prize drawing each received a Mercedes-Benz themed portable camp chair. License plate trivia was played for an after dinner diversion to show that it pays to observe all things automotive in the movies.

Greater Vancouver Cars & Coffee We are very fortunate to live on Canada’s West coast. Our driving season is usually a bit longer than the Eastern parts of Canada and the Northeastern US. BC is a great place to own and drive a Classic car. The casual, morning get-togethers of the Greater Vancouver Cars & Coffee group and similar entities, has grown tremendously in the past few years. Gatherings are often in excess of 100 cars, and they are very diverse. Events are staged in varied locations around the Lower Mainland, bringing out different cars each time. The November 12th gathering at the Coquitlam Home depot parking lot, was one of those occasions. The unusually warm weather and dry roads made for a great turnout. Hotrods, European Classics, American ‘survivors’, Japanese sports cars, there was something for all tastes. It was certainly warm enough for a good Mercedes showing. We managed to park three R107’s together, Sean Clark’s #199 Black 560SL (does he even have a roof???), Bruce Woloshyn’s perfect 380SL, and Leigh Gayman and Dan Cachola displaying the height of fashion and good taste, with a Signal Red 560SL and very spectacular Mercedes-Benz footwear, complemented by appropriately ‘assertive’ sock-wear. We were pleased to see Victoria Chan-Ross of Norwescan Motors and her innovative A-Class Mercedes SUV, from Germany. Victoria even played her now-famous bagpipes for us. One of the younger participants brought out one of the most beautiful Euro-spec W116 350SE sedans from the era oft-regarded as Mercedes best. Not to be outdone by the other exotic fast Euro offering that day, Wei Jay was there with his 190E 2.5-16V Cosworth. BC Stars VP Tony Millikin ‘celebrated diversity’ by arriving in a sports car of another German marque, but was on hand to support us and take photos. It was good to spend time at a car event again with Bruce Woloshyn, and to get to know his new ‘co-driver’ Fay Rorke. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the road again, in 2019. The Houston Section visited the 2019 Houston Auto Show on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Eighteen attendees were present to see what the Houston Auto Show had to offer.

Upon entering the show early, the first stop was the Mercedes-Benz display for a group photo. After drooling over the newest offerings from Mercedes-Benz, our attendees went on their own way to check out the rest of the show at their leisure. As with last year, attendees could partake in one of the always popular ride-and-drive test drives offered by other automakers such as the Jaguar Drive Experience, or ride as a passenger at Camp Jeep on an off-road adventure with steep inclines and rough terrain to mimic the most rugged off-road trail. It's too bad Mercedes-Benz didn't do something similar with their SUVs. It would've been a treat to take the same path in a G-class. There was something for just about everybody at the 2019 Houston Auto Show.

Our sincere thanks go to Brittney Northrup of the Houston Automobile Dealers' Association for once again providing us with the opportunity to enter the Houston Auto Show early and at a reduced admission cost.

Tony’s ‘Coffee Day’ with the BC Stars

These days, we hear a lot about Cars & Coffee. As Mercedes enthusiasts, we can debate chassis numbers, fuel injection, turbos, and Nav. Systems from Noon ‘til night. How much do we know about coffee? BC Stars VP, Tony Millikin, is on a first-name basis with the baristas at his local Starbucks in the lobby of the building where he works. Tony kindly arranged for them to demonstrate for us some of their finest offerings.

Early on a Saturday morning, we headed to the Shaw Tower in downtown Vancouver, by the Convention Centre. Atmosphere and relaxing surroundings are part of enjoying a good coffee. As it was mid-November and a little cool out, we looked even more forward to warming up over a hot drink.

The Starbucks staff had already artfully arranged their display and were proud to show us their new Reserve coffees. We had a number of choices, each very distinct in flavour.

According to Starbucks:

“We spend a lot of time in origin markets searching for the finest coffees – ones with distinct flavors that enchant, amaze and captivate. But of the thousands we encounter, only a precious few are deemed exceptional enough to become Starbucks Reserve™ coffees. These intriguing offerings are only available for limited times at select stores.”

We were invited to experience these select coffees at their best, using the premium Clover Brewing System to extract every bit of flavour.

“The Clover® brewing system uses innovative Vacuum-Press™ technology to create your cup right in front of you. You watch as a stainless steel filter lowers into the brew chamber. Hot water is added at a precise temperature to brew your coffee for an ideal length of time. The Clover® brewing system controls brew time and temperature digitally, as even small changes here can dramatically affect the outcome you taste in the cup. A thermal blanket surrounds the brew chamber to keep water within 1 degree Fahrenheit of the ideal temperature. After the coffee brews, it is pulled through a 70-micron filter. The resulting grounds are pushed out of the top of the machine. The coffee itself flows into your cup – hot, aromatic and amazingly flavourful. We’re pretty sure it will be the best cup of coffee you’ve ever tasted.”

It was very impressive demonstration and the result was very convincing. The process is a bit time-consuming, as one can imagine it must be to work effectively. The combination of a premium roasted bean, and the vacuum press and filtering, may just spoil us for anything else at a coffee chain store.

It was a nice outing downtown for many of us, and we decided to make the most of the day by gathering for a communal lunch at Anton’s, Burnaby’s famous pasta restaurant.

Many thanks to Tony for showing us a wonderful day at his favourite hangouts.

2019 M-B.E.A.T.

Spring is just around the corner so its time for you to make plans to participate in this years Mercedes British European Auto Tour whether you want to drive your Benz or not.  You’ve had the vehicle cooped up in the garage too long; its time to blow the cobwebs out of the engine, and go along with us on an exciting drive on the back roads to Flagstaff.

We will be gathering at the Denny’s Restaurant located at the northeast corner of Interstate 17 and the Carefree Highway on Saturday, April 13, 2019; the restaurant is located behind the Chevron Fuel Station.  If you want a free breakfast from the Denny’s menu (courtesy of event leader Bob Yoder), be there no later than 6:30am.  A driver’s meeting is scheduled for 7:30am during which driving instructions, details of our expected stops for refreshments and lunch and route map will be distributed.  All roads on the driving route are paved so you can bring your most prized vehicles on the tour and not worry about any rock chips or broken windshields; just watch for cows!

We will be driving through Sedona on the route, so there will be time for you and your passenger(s) to do some shopping or sightseeing there during the afternoon.  The opportunity for a group dinner will be offered during the driver’s meeting in the morning so that we can make advance reservations.

Our target location in Flagstaff is the Little America Hotel located at 2515 E Butler Avenue which is the first exit east of Interstate 17 on Interstate 40.  Visit their website at https://flagstaff.littleamerica.com/ or call their reservation line (800.352.4386) and choose AAA or AARP reservations if you are a member of either to get a King for $180, 2 queens for $189 or a couple’s Bed & Breakfast King package for $204 if you do it right away.  We are still negotiating with Little America for better pricing and will let you know by email if we can get lower rates. Use of nine rooms will get our rate down to $149.

There is a nominal charge of $25 per vehicle for this event to cover the cost of event materials and liquid refreshments during our morning stop. You are responsible for lodging and food.

Don’t spend time thinking about this event; just fill out the registration form below and expedite it to the designated address!!  Don’t hesitate to call Bob Yoder at 480-510-8210 if you have any questions.

Valentine’s Drive-2-Dine at Mader’s German Restaurant

26 members and guests of the Wisconsin Section enjoyed great weather, great food and lots of Gemütlichkeit at a February 16th Drive-2-Dine at Mader’s German restaurant in Milwaukee.

This was the first time in recent memory that the Section held a Fahren zum Essen during the winter months, and the turnout was outstanding.  Members from as far away as Green Bay and Oshkosh made the trip to downtown Milwaukee to enjoy authentic German cuisine in the elegance and quality of Mader’s private dining room.  We had so many in attendance that Dick & Nancy Kusch had to sit at their own table in what was quickly coined the “VIP” section!

After lunch (and dessert for those who still had room), Bruce Hamilton thanked Frank Lubinski for the idea of a Valentine’s D-2-D, and gave an update on future Section events including the “Concours within a Concours” planned for Show N Glow in August.

The weather cooperated with temperatures that were a bit cold, but there was no snow and the roads were dry.

Mader’s usual parking issues and an event at Fiserv Forum slowed our departure, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm, camaraderie and good cheer from the event, and it certainly was a welcome antidote for “cabin fever.”
